Redmond-Shackleford House

1885; 300 Main St.

Sheltered by a walled garden, the flamboyant, Second Empire style residence of stuccoed masonry is dramatized by a vivid polychrome pain scheme. The rich interior decorative painting is attributed to Edward Zoeller, a Bavarian fresco painter who settled in Tarboro in the 1850s. A detached brick kitchen stand to the rear. The house was built for Claudia and Kate Redmond, daughters of a wealthy merchant. Kate married local industrialist Jonathan Shackleford.
