A fine, Doric porch and other Greek Revival details derived from the pattern books of Asher Benjamin distinguish the 2-story, 5-bay house.  Planter Jonas Carr erected a 1-story dwelling here, to which he added the Greek Revival front block before his death in 1843.  His son, Elias, who inherited the property and made further expansions, was an agrarian reformer in the post-Civil War era and governor of the state.  Grounds include formal gardens with large oaks crepe myrtles, camellias, azaleas, English boxwoods, and towering magnolias.  A large barn, ca. 1860, is among the several outbuildings.
